About Us
In 2022 a father in Finland watched the schools around him go digital faster than they ever had. Tablets in every classroom, handwriting squeezed to a few minutes a week, and children arriving in first grade who could swipe but couldn't hold a pencil. His son was four. He wanted the boy to walk into that school already able to write his name, and he wanted him to get there without a screen.
So he designed a copybook. The letters and numbers are carved into the page, so the pen drops into the groove and a four-year-old can't form the letter wrong. The ink fades in about ten minutes, so the page is blank again by the next morning and the same page works for months. His son did a page before breakfast, unasked, and then another one. That was the whole test, and it passed.
The Groovd was a name on a box of copybooks in February 2022. It mostly still is. That four-year-old is eight now.

What we make
The Children's Magic Copybooks are still the center of everything. Four books, Alphabet, Numbers, Math and Drawing, with the pen, refills and the grip trainer in the box. They're made for ages 3 to 8 and for either hand. A second set came later for children who are ready for more: Cursive, Nature, Transportation and Geography.
Around the copybooks we've added more than fifty other learning tools for ages 2 to 8, picked by the same rule the copybook was designed around. They work without a screen, mostly without batteries, and only when a child does something with her hands. A shape sorter, a busy board, a pocket microscope, a wooden clock, a multiplication board game, a lacing shoe. You can browse them by age.
Who buys from us
Since 2022, more than 300,000 families have ordered from The Groovd. Most are in the United States, then Australia, Canada, New Zealand and the United Kingdom.
Here's the part we didn't plan. Three out of four of them are grandparents. We found that out from our own post-purchase survey, and it changed how we talk about the books. A grandparent buying a copybook usually isn't buying handwriting. She's buying ten minutes at the kitchen table with a child who wants to show her the page. So that's what we build for.
What 300,000 families taught us
We read the reviews and the support inbox every day, and after four years a few things repeat often enough to count as rules.
Ten minutes beats an hour. The ink fades in about ten minutes on purpose. That's the length of a small child's attention, and a page a day for three weeks does more than a long session on Sunday.
The pen is the product. When a grooved book fails a child, it's almost never the grooves. It's a pen that won't leave a mark unless she presses hard. So the pen and its refills are in every box, and we sell more for a few dollars when they run out.
Let them choose the book. The child who refuses the Alphabet book will happily do the Drawing one for a week, and it's the same hand doing the same work.
The page they show you is the point. Everything we make has to produce the moment where a five-year-old holds up a page and says "look". The handwriting comes along behind it.
How we run things
We're a small company. The Groovd is run from Hyvinkää, Finland, an hour north of Helsinki, and we ship to families in the US, Australia, Canada, New Zealand and the UK.
Families rate us 4.5 on Trustpilot, and 4.9 from 2,102 reviews on this site.
Everything we sell comes with a 60-day money-back guarantee. If a copybook isn't working for your child, send it back within 60 days and we refund it. We'd rather do that than have a book sit in a drawer.
We read every message that comes to support@thegroovd.com.
The guides on this site are written by Miss Sarah, a Montessori guide with fifteen years in classrooms, and she uses the copybooks in her own room.
Where to start
If your child is between three and eight, start with the copybooks. If you'd like to understand how a grooved book works before you buy one, Miss Sarah wrote the long answer. And if you're shopping for a grandchild and don't know where to begin, she made a list by age.
