They press it to a leaf, peek in the top and look up at you with big eyes. Then they hand it over so you can see it too.

A red leaf in a child's hand, and the same leaf seen through the Miniscope

Pull a leaf off the hedge. Look what's inside it.

Up close, a plain red leaf is full of tiny shining cells. Kids see that in the first minute. Then they want to look at every leaf in the yard.

A girl lying on the sidewalk, looking at it through her Miniscope

The hidden treasure under their feet.

That's the plain gray sidewalk out front. Under the lens it sparkles with tiny crystals and flecks of gold. Kids will lie right down on it to get a closer look.

Sidewalk

The same sidewalk, up close. It sparkles like glitter.

Butterfly wing

It's covered in tiny colored scales.

Salt

Salt

Right off the kitchen table. Every grain is a little glass cube.

A boy on the couch with a tablet, and the same boy outside looking at a tree stump through the Miniscope

Finally, something that beats the screens.

They used to ask for the tablet. Now they ask to go outside.

They find an ant, then a beetle, then a leaf with tiny holes in it. Then they run inside to show you.

An old 1974 photo of a girl lying in the grass, and a boy today lying in the grass with his Miniscope

Give them a childhood like ours.

When we were kids, we stayed outside until someone called us in for dinner. Every bug and every rock was worth a closer look.

One look at an ant up close, and the backyard is the best place they know. Now you're the one calling them in for dinner.

A grandmother laughs with her grandson on the porch steps. He has his Miniscope and a red leaf.

They'll tell everyone it came from you.

It slips into a coat pocket, so it goes to school, to the park and to every sleepover. Each time a friend takes a look, they hear who gave it to them.

Easy enough to use on their own.

So it comes out again the next day, and the day after that.

Turn the little wheel, and an ant's head fills the whole circle.

Put the clear end on a leaf or a sleeve and look in the top.

Its own light 3

It lights up what they're looking at, so shady spots and cloudy days still work.

The questions we get

Will it survive a five-year-old?

Solid plastic body, glass lenses, and the focus wheel is the only moving part. The shape is smooth on purpose, so there's nothing for small hands to snap off. It's made to live in a coat pocket.

What will they actually look at?

Whatever they find. Leaves, petals, a feather, salt, sugar, their own hair, the threads of a sweater, pond water, and every bug in the yard that will hold still.

Does it work if they wear glasses?

Yes. The focus wheel covers the difference, so glasses stay on.

How much does it actually magnify?

60x to 120x, set with the dial on the barrel. Enough to bring up plant cells, insect wings, fabric fibers and the grain in a crystal of salt.

What comes in the box?

The Miniscope, with its focus dial and built-in LED.

How big is it?

Four inches tall, two inches across. It fits a coat pocket or the side pouch of a school bag.

Can I send it back?

Sixty days from the day it lands. Email us and you get your money back, minus shipping.

My kid loves this

We brought the Groovd Miniscope to the backyard and my kids spent ages looking at sand. I especially like that it gives us something fun to do together. Great for any kid who likes asking "what is that?"

Fun for the whole family

I originally got this for my kids, but honestly I have had just as much fun looking through it. We have checked out bits of bark, soil, and whatever else we can find. Anything that makes them forget about the iPad for a while is a win for me.

My kid loves this

We brought the Groovd Miniscope to our garden and my kids spent ages looking at pollen. I especially like that it gives them a reason to explore. It is now permanently sitting by the back door.

So many things to inspect

Such a simple idea, but it has been a huge hit here. My 7-year-old started with the edge of a pinecone and then wanted to inspect seeds too. It encourages them to slow down and really look. Such a nice way to spend time together outside.
